The Holy Spirit’s work in His church was summarized in 4 main areas
1. To Empower, 2. to Purify, 3. To Reveal, 4. To Unify
The Gifts of / from the Holy Spirit.
Joel was the prophet looking forward to a time when Gods spirit would indwell the people of God in a new way… Joel 2 :28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
This became reality with the Spirit being poured out upon the church in Acts 2: 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
Why are we given gifts from the Holy Spirit…
The Spirit and in particular the gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to equip the church till Christ returns. 1 Cor 1: 4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, 5 that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— 6 even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— 7 so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
The gifts were given to their and our situation in redemptive history, (in between waiting for Jesus return), we are in the period between his ascension after resurrection and his glorious return.
Paul looks forward to Jesus’s return and states 1 Cor 13:10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away…these gifts (imperfect gifts) will operate and empower the church till Jesus returns, then the perfect will appear.
What are the gifts for…
The Gifts are for:.. 1 Cor 14:12 since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
Eph 4:12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
These gifts given by the Spirit 1 Cor 12:4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good… 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
The Spirit gives his people gifts of empowerment not for personal gratification or to elevate the recipient’s importance or status… but for the building up of his church for others in the body…
The gifts are given to make the whole greater the whole body of Christ unified, strengthened, equipped and sanctified.
The Gifts are given as He wills for his Glory in the building up and equipping of his church.

What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like. Saint Augustine
