Saved Titus 3
I was shooting in Hawaii at a notoriously shallow beach break the waves were well overhead and I was alone at sunset. It sounds idyllic beautiful and it was but things went pear shaped pretty quickly. I shot the barrel as it approached the wave was breaking into ankle deep water as I dove through the back of the wave the force grabbed me. I have done this dozens of times before and never had an issue. However the force of the wave began dragging me backwards, usually I can break free into deeper water, this time I was dragged backwards over in the lip impacting the reef.
I hyper extended my knee rupturing the Posterior crochet ligament then tearing the medial crucial and the calf finally on the impact fracturing the tibia also. I was in excruciating pain with no-one in the water or on the beach close by. I was in need of saving. eventually I dragged myself up the sand unable to stand without my knee going back the wrong way…
There are times when we are in need of help in need of saving. I need the intervention of others on my behalf. This is what Titus 3 explains so succinctly 3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Saviour appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
This is a fantastic summary of the gospel message that Paul has been instructing titus to teach passionately and truthfully.
Here we see salvation hinging on the main verse 5 he saved us,
The need for salvation… we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, (Morally and mentally depraved)…led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, (the passive verbs indicate that we were led astray by evil, enslaved to our sinful passions),… passing our days in malice and envy, (wishing evil on there and desiring the good things they have)…. hated by others and hating one another. (reciprocal hostility in relationships.)
The source of salvation… 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us,… the appearance of the saviour Christ Jesus is not the beginning of Gods grace but the fulfilment of it. this epiphany is Gods initiative to save it originates in him and from him not us.
The grounds for salvation… not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, Nothing in us attracted it or deserved it this unmerited grace of God, in the sending of Jesus to be born, live, die and rise again is according to his good mercy and act of pure grace.
The means of salvation… What does salvation do within us. Four nouns describe it. washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, (washed made clean and baptised) (regeneration reborn made again) (Renewed not improved but remade) and the Holy Spirit poured out richly through Jesus. All followers of Jesus have these things in their lives.
The goal of salvation… Those whom God has washed regenerated and justified because of his grace and mercy become heirs with Christ Eternal life is not the goal is the fruit of heirship. Its the becoming a true family mender with God for his Glory thats is the goal.
The fruit of salvation… 8b I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. Changed lives new renewed people should live differently and have different goals.
- So salvation is not of us but from Him it is through Jesus and for his glory it is evidenced in our changed hearts and lives.
- We are disconnected from the slavish passions of our heart and this world and connected to Christ as joint heirs and bond servants.
All men ought to think of Christ because of the office Christ fills between God and man. He is the eternal Son of God through whom alone the Father can be known, approached, and served. He is the appointed Mediator between God and man through whom alone we can be reconciled with God, pardoned, justified, and saved. J. C. Ryle
Only through repentance and faith in Christ can anyone be saved. No religious activity will be sufficient, only true faith in Jesus Christ alone. Ravi Zacharias
Many Christians have so busied themselves with programs and activities that they no longer know how to be silent and meditate on God’s word or recognise the mysteries that are in the Person of Christ. Ravi Zacharias
Grace cannot prevail…until our lifelong certainty that someone is keeping score has run out of steam and collapsed. Robert Farrar Capon
”When the Christian faith becomes defined by who we are and what we do and not by who Christ is and what he did for us, we miss the gospel - and we, ironically, become more disobedient. Tullian Tchividjian
