“Our Lord sent His disciples out as sheep among wolves; now the wolves are being invited into the sheepfold.” – Vance Havner

Twisted                   1Tim 1:  7-11.

There is such a vast difference between a perfect peeling wave and a twisted below sea level contorted mutant slab. Both are waves and both are made of water yet the difference is so obvious. When something is contorted and twisted, when statements or facts are misused and miss quoted taken out of context or just plain omitted, what are we to do?

This is the case facing Timothy, so what is Timothy to do?    Paul tells him he is to ‘stay there’ and command these men not to teach.

How tempting it is to run away from hard decisions and even harder discussions. I want to make it clear here that Paul is not commanding timothy to fight over every doctrine or biblical thought. He is telling Timothy to stand firm stay and command that men preach the truth not error.

Sometimes we are so ready to command or fight discuss vigorously every issue. So that when we do come to one thats worth standing up for people are dull to our voice…

Or alternatively we accept everything and discuss nothing letting it all slide and find that when we look to stand on a truth we nave nothing there to stand up for and nothing to stand upon.

Paul is telling Timothy to quell / stop false teaching within his church.

False teaching as we saw can be measured by the fruit of the men and the teaching. It can  and should be measured against the word of God. In this case the Gospel given to the Apostles. Acts 2: 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.

The fruit of the true Gospel is very different and here we see the object of devotion is also very different… the People in acts were devoted to the apostles teaching… the teachers in Ephesus …. devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies,

Its important to note that these men were part of the church…. here is a warning for us all…

not all who claim Christ are worth listening to or reading, they may not be on the same team. Jesus and Paul warned of this:

Matt 7: 15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognise them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognise them by their fruits.  also Acts 20: 28-32.

Churches are not debating societies where everyones views are as valid as everyone else’s. Gods Word and what it declares plainly, is what should override everything else. This was one of the contentions of the reformation the Popes opinions and work should come under scripture not be over it similarly church leaders or prophets should come under the authority of scripture. I, you, we are all held accountable and measurable by Gods word as revealed in the scriptures.

Paul concludes this passage to Timothy with instruction about the Law: 8… Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully,

The Law of God is used in so many controversies we must do this and that, especially that particular persons interpretation of the law.  Paul tells Timothy and us that the Law is good if used properly… The Law shows us our sinful nature it sheds light on who we are and also on our responsibility and response to God.

Jesus instructed that … For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners. The teachers in Ephesus had forgotten this teaching they wasted so much time on myths and controversy because they believed they were righteous. They had gross pride believing there ancestral tree or knowledge made them right with God.

* True teaching conforms to the law and the Gospel… Do you know it? Can you tell it accurately, is it the one Jesus and the Apostles taught?

*Do you share it with others or keep it to yourself?

‘Law and Gospel go together, for the Law without the gospel is diagnosis without remedy; but the Gospel without the Law is only the Good News of salvation for people who don’t believe they need it because they have never heard the bad news of judgement.’ W. Wiersbe

The heresy of one age becomes the orthodoxy of the next. Helen Keller

“I would say much of religious heresy is the result of a misunderstanding of the basic nature of God. And once we have a proper understanding of God, then usually most of the areas of our life coincide with who God is and what He desires for each one of us.”
